Your first e-bike: a 2026 buyer's guide

Australia's e-bike market has matured fast — and so have the incentives to get people out of cars. Here's our plain-English guide to choosing your first e-bike in 2026.

Step 1: Pick your ride style

Commuter, step-through or mountain? Your answer decides frame geometry, tyre size and motor placement. City riders: step-through frames with rear hub motors are the sweet spot.

Step 2: Understand the numbers

Voltage (36V or 48V) determines torque ceiling; battery capacity in amp-hours determines range. A 13 Ah pack on a 250W motor comfortably delivers 50–60 km of assisted riding.

Step 3: Budget for the long run

Look for hydraulic disc brakes, integrated lights and a removable battery — three features that separate bikes you'll keep from bikes you'll replace.

Happy riding — and remember, every five machines sold through EVMarket plants another tree.
